While Butoh by nature resists definition, it can broadly be categorized as contemporary Japanese dance, inspired by Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno following World War II. Grounded in visual imagery, and visceral human emotion, Butoh is a powerful form for story telling.
